Anyone else annoyed with the fact that the manga catagory is divided into only "Digital" and "Traditional" sub-catagories instead of say...oh I don't know, GENRES? I figure that's more important, don't you think?
--------------------

This was the first page to a manga-style adaptation of Hans Christian Andersen's "The Little Mermaid," that I was working on Fall 2006. Now that it's 2008, I figured it was about time I upload this...haha.

Even though I was adapting the story for a manga format (and changing the setting to feudal Japan), I ultimately stayed very loyal to the original story. If you haven't read the more original version, it's much more heartbreaking than the Disney version we're all so familiar with, and if you ask me, much more beautiful even with the tragic elements.

And for the people out there who are quick to cast a judgment on anime/manga and their fans...I did NOT change the setting to feudal Japan because I watch too much Inuyasha (which I don't, btw) or because I'm a Japanophile or because I assumed that only Japanese settings work with a traditionally Japanese medium. I made the conscientious decision to change the setting because I saw that many of the themes in Andersen's story ran parallel to a lot of Japanese Aesthetics, particularly in literature/poetry and art.

when are you going to upload the rest
Ummm...that's hard to say. I actually never got around to finishing the whole thing (for a lot of reasons). I definitely want to finish it, but it might take a while because I'm on my last semester of school. I do have about 10 pages drawn out, although many of them still have to be inked/toned. I'll probably upload them as I get around to them though.
Oh, and thanks for the fav! :D
This is brilliant! I also have a mermaid story I want to set in Japan, if you're ever interested in a fun project!
Thank you! I'm afraid this semester is leaving me without time for even a proper night's sleep, but it sounds interesting. I'd like to see what you come up with though :)

And thank you very much for the fav, too!
You're welcome, and thank you for the kind words! Great work!!!
Will you upload the currently finished pages?

WTF?! SEX MAKES BABIES? :O
Haha, technically I wouldn't have any of the pages up then... How sad :P

Seriously though, I am disappointed to say that this wasn't a project I got around to finishing (like oh so many others). I would like to eventually, but I would probably start from the beginning again because my drawing skills have improved (if only a little bit) since then.
